Key Concept #2: Acid vs Alkaline

Do you remember that television show "The Magic School Bus"?

If you don't, here's a little re-cap.

It was about a 4th grade class who, led by their whacky teacher Ms. Frizzle, would board a magic school bus that could shrink to a microscopic level. They would explore all kinds of inner workings in some of the craziest of places. The premise of the show was to teach kids about science in a fun way. The reason it popped into my head is because I remember quite a few episodes of Ms. Frizzle and her gang exploring the human body.

And yes my friends, that is what we are doing today.

We are looking at our bodies from a cellular view.

My dream is for us to stop dieting to loose weight. To stop trying to "hack" our body into being something other than the glorious vessel it is already designed to be. I'd love for all the shakes and pills and programs to be tossed out the window. I would love for us to start paying attention to the inner workings of our body. To start caring for ourselves on a cellular level. Appreciating the subtle nuances of our ever evolving physical form. I truly believe when you start nurturing yourself from the inside you create a glowing outside as well.

With that being said, the 2nd Key Concept we're diving into is your bodies PH balance, Acid vs Alkaline. We're going to learn how to support that sensitive balance through diet and lifestyle choices. No need to follow a meal plan when you thoroughly understand this concept, so read on!

PH Balance:

What is it?

PH balance measures the alkalizing or acidic qualities of a substance. It's measured on a scale 0-14, lower numbers being alkaline, 7 being neutral and the higher range acidic. PH stands for "potential of hydrogen". Ph is found by measuring the amount of hydrogen ions in any given solution. The more hydrogen ions the more acidic a substance is.

Your body is meant to stay slightly alkaline with a blood PH measuring at 7.365.

Your body tends toward an acidic state. Stress, not enough exercise, over exertion, infection and diet can all send your PH to rise. Being the perfectly designed organism it is, your body then sends signals to balance you out ASAP. If you haven't been assisting your body by nourishing yourself with alkalizing fuel it will neutralize by any means necessary. That could even mean stealing calcium and magnesium from your teeth and bones!

Letting your body stay in this acid state keeps you constantly on defense. Your insides are working 24/7 to keep your PH in check. Staying in this acidic and inflamed state is just asking for trouble. Bad bacteria, fungi, yeast, viruses, even cancer cells thrive in this acid laced environment.

How to create a better balance...

What you put in your mouth is numero uno!

Eating a dieting that is roughly 70% alkaline is ideal. Generally speaking,  green plant life will be your go-to for alkalizing your diet. Some grains fall under the alkaline category such as quinoa or amaranth.  Lentils and legumes are a thumbs up too. Despite their acidic taste, grapefruit, lemons and limes are all alkalizing. Lastly healthy fats and oils rich with Omega 3 are going to be a great addition to your new alkaline way of life.

While your plate is going to be a major part of this journey, you can also help your body in other parts of your life.

De-stress!

Take some time for meditation or a calming mind-body practice. Take a warm bath, self massage, do whatever you have to do to keep yourself at peace.

Get some shut eye!

Go to bed at 9, who the heck cares! Get 8 hours of sleep, or better yet, get all the sleep your body desires!

Stay away from harmful pesticides and chemicals.

This could mean choosing organic, dropping the cigarettes, ix-naying the preservatives. Also leaving behind processed foods, refined sugars,  processed oils and trans fats.

I hope this gives you some insight on how to become one with the inner workings of your body.

Get your cells functioning properly, keep your mind in check and your heart at peace.
